As the rain poured onto Highway 101 this morning, Northern California commuters were not expecting to witness one of the most tragic bus crashes they’ve seen in a long time.
According to local news reports, a Greyhound bus was traveling on Highway 101 from Los Angeles to San Jose early this morning when the vehicle rolled onto the center divider, landing on its side. A driver on the southbound lanes ended up hitting some of the debris after the incident, causing property damage to his vehicle. At least two individuals were killed as a result of the crash, while eight others suffered injuries. According to the California Highway Patrol, most of those who were mildly injured were treated at the scene while at least one person suffered major injuries. The driver in the vehicle impacted by the bus crash was not harmed.
The vehicle was carrying 20 passengers and it left Los Angeles around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. The first stop was San Jose, but the bus was scheduled to also stop by San Francisco and Oakland.
According to initial reports, Greyhound drivers are required to rest nine hours before trips. As officials look into the road conditions, the driver’s actions, and the overall condition of the vehicle itself, it’s still early to identify what caused this crash with precision. Nonetheless, investigators are requesting a blood sample from the driver, who’s now in the hospital, in order to determine if drugs or alcohol were consumed prior to the incident.
While no other vehicles were impacted, the crash caused a partial blockage of the road, snarling the early morning commute that had already been slowed by the rain. The northbound lanes of the Highway 101 were blocked for several miles.
So far, authorities have not been able to comment on the factors that prompted the crash. The identity of the victims are still to be released.
