motorcycle accident, crash, safety, personal injury

When it comes to auto safety, many drivers often forget that they too are responsible for the safety of those who are sharing the road with them, like motorcycle riders. But motorcyclists also have a responsibility and should make sure they are following all important safety steps so they are never exposing themselves to unnecessary risks.

As the weather gets warmer and more motorcycle riders hit the road, many celebrate May as it being the Motorcycle Safety Month.

We have joined others and decided to share some important safety tips that will help motorcycle riders to avoid collisions.

First and foremost, remember that you should always remain visible. Since drivers are often not able to see motorcyclists, especially at night, riders should have their headlights on, wear reflective strips and decals on their clothing and even add a few to their motorcycles if possible. Remember, drivers may suffer because of blind spots, so keep that in mind when changing lanes.

Also, make sure you have all the gear you need so that you’re protected in the event of a collision, even if minor. Always have your helmet on, wear thick or leather clothing, and have eye protection on at all times.

When riding, much like driving, riders should think defensively. Give other vehicles plenty of space so you may react if something goes wrong. Make yourself more visible by looking at positioning and studying how to best place yourself so that others may see you.

Another important part of being a motorcycle rider is to know exactly how you motorcycle works. Make sure to get the proper training and if needed, enroll in refresher courses in case you’re feeling rusty.

If you’re new to the road, practice long and hard before putting yourself trough heavy traffic. Knowing how to handle your motorcycle will be the most valuable lesson you’re going to learn, since it will help you to avoid sticky situations when the time comes.
